Message from the Melbourne Clivia Group Inc.

Welcome to the website of the Melbourne Clivia Group Inc.

The Melbourne Clivia Group (MCG) is the second Clivia club to be formally established in Australia. Laurens Rijke - Pansy Starting in August 2008, under the leadership of a hard-working and enthusiastic committee, the group has since been incorporated and has also affiliated with the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria (RHSV), a body that acts as an umbrella organisation for garden clubs throughout the country.

Like many other Clivia groups, the MCG is made up of members who are long-term growers of eClivia, some of whom have varied collections, and others who own one or two plants, with the majority fitting somewhere in between. A challenge of the club is to meet the needs of the newcomers to Clivia as well Day dreamas being relevant to those highly experienced members.  We hope that all local members who belong to the Clivia Society, which is based in South Africa, will wish to also join our group. Membership of MCG in mid August 2010 stood at around 74 people but is expected to further grow.

With this diversity of members in mind, our bimonthly meetings attempt to cover a main topic, a shorter subsidiary topic, an introduction by owners of plants brought for the display, and a short question and answer segment.  A brief newsletter has commenced and is sent electronically where possible or otherwise by ordinary mail.

One advantage arising from such as assembly of individLaurens Rijke Interspecificuals is that they bring diverse backgrounds and skills to the group.  John Bannenberg, for instance, has produced a Clivia logo, George Simmler acts as our resident photographer, and a newsletter and website was set up by Lisa Fox.

In 2009 we also commenced a trading table at the meetings where members can buy or sell seeds, seedlings or plants, as well as having a regular display table. In addition, we participate as a club at the ABC Gardening Expo in early October.

The 2010 committee consists of Helen Marriott (president), Diane Mathews (vice-president), Erika van der Spuy (secretary), Rae Begg (treasurer), Brenda Girdlestone and George Simmler (committee members).

From time to time the club has been asked to supply speakers for other garden clubs and a number of members have assisted in this regard.

Although still a young club, the committee hopes to arrange some kind of Clivia display in spring 2011.
